Hollister native J.C. Clayton and the BYU softball team were eliminated from the NCAA Super Regional with a 10-2 loss to Arizona on Saturday, the second loss for the Cougars in the best-of-three series.

BYU lost to the No. 10 Wildcats by a 2-1 margin during Game 1 on Friday in Tucson, Ariz.

While Arizona advances to the College World Series as a result, BYU can reflect on perhaps its greatest season ever.

The Cougars enjoyed their first-ever trip to the Super Regionals, and complete their season with a 46-13 record — the most wins by a softball team in BYU history, according to the school’s website.

BYU had advanced to the NCAA’s second round, otherwise known as the Super Regional, after going 3-0 to open the tournament, which included an upset victory over No. 7 Texas.

Meanwhile, Clayton, a 2009 graduate of San Benito High School, finished her two-game slate in the Super Regionals by going 3 of 7 at the plate, and concluded her freshman season with 80 hits.

Clayton is only the fourth player in BYU history to reach 80 hits in a single season, and is tied for third on the list, according to the school’s website.

Recently named Freshman of the Year in the Mountain West Conference, Clayton posted a .430 (80 of 186) batting average for the Cougars this season — the best on the team — with nine doubles, two triples, 17 RBI, 93 total bases, 56 runs scored and a .476 on-base percentage.

Klauer, Spartans eliminated from WAC Tournament

The San Jose State Spartans were eliminated from the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday after they dropped a 13-1 game to top-seeded Fresno State, ending the college career of former Haybaler Karson Klauer.

Klauer, a 2006 graduate of San Benito High School, was one of two Spartans (23-37) who played in all 60 games this season.

The starting second baseman batted .316 (75 of 237) for San Jose State — third on the team — with 12 doubles and 31 runs scored. Klauer also led the team in home runs (7), total bases (110) and RBI (43).

Hollister pitcher Huston helps lead Mount Marty at NAIA baseball tournament

Hollister resident Nick Huston and the Mount Marty College baseball team lost in the championship game of the NAIA Baseball Tournament opening round on Friday to the defending national champion Lubbock Christian Chaparrals in Lubbock, Texas.

Needing to win both championship games in the double-elimination tournament, Mount Marty — which is located in Yankton, South Dakota — took the first game by a 3-2 margin before falling in Game 2, 23-5.

Meanwhile, Huston, a graduate of Palma High School in Salinas, helped lead the Lancers past York (Nebraska) earlier in the day on Friday when he pitched a complete game 12-5 victory over the Panthers.

It was his 13th start of the season, which tied a Mount Marty College school record, according to the Yankton Press and Dakotan. Huston, a junior, also went 5-5 on the season with four complete games and a 6.72 earned run average.

Mount Marty, which finished its regular season with a 20-4 record and the Great Plains Athletic Conference title, completed its 2010 campaign at 39-17 — the most wins in a single season for the Lancers.

The team advanced to the National Championship opening round as a result for the first time in school history.
