After finishing the season for Cal State Monterey Bay with a .333 batting average and three home runs, former Baler Brian Haggett was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America’s Capital One Academic All-District VIII team Tuesday.
With the nomination, Haggett is eligible to be named an Academic All-American.
Haggett is also expected to be named to the first team All-Conference team in the California Athletic Association, Cal State Monterey Bay head coach Walt White said.
“I think Brian is just a great kid — I love him,” White said. “He is a natural leader just by the way he goes about his business. Obviously, he is a great baseball player. He did well here (San Benito). He did well in junior college and he was just special for us. He can do a little bit of everything.”
In Haggett’s first year at Monterey, the Otters finished the season 26-24 and missed the postseason.
Haggett lead the with 63 hits, which included 10 doubles and a triple. The junior majors in kinesiology and holds a 3.67 GPA.
“He is a natural talent and a natural leader,” White said. “All those things allow him to be a great player.” The Otters season ended Sunday after Monterey lost to Sonoma State. The Otters did not earn a playoff berth.
Haggett is expected to return as the team’s starting first baseman next year.
Jason Roascio
Former Baler and Wyoming freshman Jason Roascio competed in his first Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championship for Track and Field on Wednesday, after press time.
Roascio entered the meet with an outside chance to compete for a championship in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.
Roascio entered the MWC meet with the eighth-best time in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.81. He ranks 22nd in the 200-meter dash with a time of 49.77.
Those are the only two competitions he will compete in, according to the MWC website.
Brian Granger
Former Baler Brian Granger started his sixth game Sunday for Cal Poly against UC Davis. Granger lasted 1 2/3 innings and allowed four runs and five hits.
Granger did not walk a batter and struck out one. He did not receive the loss. Cal Poly evened the score at 4 in the fifth inning, but lost 5-4.
In his six starts, Granger is 0-1 with a 4.43 ERA. Granger has struck out 13 batters in 20.1 innings so far this year.
Lizzy Gatto
Canisius College senior Lizzy Gatto was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District first team earlier this month.
Gatto is a two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic honoree. This year she hit .305 in 44 games with eight doubles and 23 RBIs. She hit a team-high six home runs. Her home runs are the most by a Canisius outfielder since 2005.
Gatto is ranked second all-time in stolen bases for Canisius with 62.
