A pioneering one-day economic development conference

A pioneering one-day economic development conferenceis set to take place on Thursday, Oct. 19 at the Veterans Building in downtown Hollister.

The conference will bring together farm and business owners, economic development professionals, government officials, sustainability experts, business association leaders, and integrated waste management practitioners from across California to discuss community-driven economic development.

The conference, titled “Redefining Economic Development in California: San Benito County, A New Model for Success,” will:

· showcase local businesses that are taking advantage of growth markets in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, green building, and zero-waste manufacturing

· give national experts a platform to define these market trends and facilitate discussion on how the Central Coast region can position itself as a statewide leader in “sustainable” business

· show how the City of Hollister and San Benito County are using their resources to build a strong base of small and medium-sized, locally owned businesses – instead of using tax breaks and subsidies to attract large companies from outside the county.

“The Central Coast counties have a big opportunity to capitalize on these sustainable business trends,” says Jeff Pyle, Economic Development Manager, City of Hollister. “Let’s pull together as a region, set some targets, and develop a more collaborative approach to economic development overall.”

Speakers will include Rep. Sam Farr; Pat Wiggins, Jeff Danzinger, and Gary Petersen, of the California Integrated Waste Management Board; Michael Dimock, executive director, Roots of Change Fund; Ken Alston, CEO, McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry; Paul Hain, oresident, San Benito County Farm Bureau; Gil Friend, CEO, Natural Logic; Michelle Long, executive director, Sustainable Connections; and Sallie Calhoun, Owner/Operator, Paicines Ranch.

Conveners include the city of Hollister, San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, San Benito County, California Integrated Waste Management Board, and the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies
