Two newcomers to local politics will face off for the Hollister City Council seat currently occupied by Brian Conroy, who decided not to run for re-election.
Because the incumbent did not seek re-election, the deadline to file for the race was extended by five days.
The potential council members from Conroy’s district are Saratoga firefighter Brad Pike, who founded the “Stay Alive on 25” campaign, and retired nurse Helen Ross, a member of the city’s airport advisory commission.
No more candidates joined the District 1 race after the Aug. 6 deadline for the other two districts, whose incumbents – Tony Bruscia and Tony LoBue – are both vying for a second term.
Both candidates in District 1 say fixing Hollister’s money problems should be the number one priority for city government. They’ve both been involved in the community and will attempt to take their commitments to another level.
In the other two districts:
– Challenging Bruscia in District 5 will be two candidates, nurse Monica Johnson and deputy marshal Martin Deffee. Longtime resident Mark Paxton was disqualified from the ballot because he returned his nomination documents on the last day of eligibility – and didn’t have enough valid signatures.
– Challenging LoBue in District 4 will be longtime educator and retiring school administrator Doug Emerson.
