Young Bulldog Boxing Club boxer brings 6-1 record into bout in
King City
Tony Corrales, 13, is hoping to keep his six-bout winning streak going.

On June 26, Corrales is scheduled to face Jerry Mondragon in King City. Mondragon has 26 fights under his belt, while Corrales has just seven.

But Bulldog Boxing coach Zeke Lopez said he expects it to be a good match.

“He is fighting guys that have a lot more fights and is stopping them,” said Bulldog Boxing owner and trainer Zeke Lopez. “He has a lot of power and has very good body shots. He has been hurting them, giving them late counts.”

Last week in Tulare, Corrales fought against Lionel Ayala, of Selma, and won. Ayala had defeated Mondragon two times previously.

“Tony was very, very good, but he got tired,” Lopez said. “He came back to the corner and told me that he had to run, and I told him he sure did.”

Ever since then, Lopez has been running hills with Corrales to run to get ready for the bout.

“He told me ‘my legs hurt, my side hurts,'” Lopez said. “But I told him it was better it hurts now than when he is in the ring.”

In the eight months that Corrales has been fighting with Lopez, the 95-pounder has compiled a 6-1 record.

“It surprised me,” Lopez said. “I want to see where he is at. It is not going to do him any good if we fight kids he can beat. A lot of clubs in California know him and don’t want to fight him.”

Bulldog Boxing is holding a fund-raiser yard sale beginning Saturday at 8 a.m. Proceeds go to help fix the gym. Details: Call Lopez at 636-1349.
