Hollister City Council members on Monday unanimously voted in favor of placing a Measure T sales tax extension on the November ballot.
As expected, council members agreed to pursue an extension to the 1 percent sales tax – approved in November 2007 and expiring in the spring – but they also clarified some details for the proposal.
Council members had the option to change the tax percentage and length of the term, but chose to go with the same figures as the current levy – 1 percent with a five-year sunset.
Hollister, with a general fund of about $14 million, hopes to raise about $3 million annually and prevent cuts to fill the shortfall.
Council members are set to consider an official resolution May 21.
About two-thirds of voters in late 2007 supported the Measure T tax extension, as officials and supporters of the proposal had touted a boost of services with an approval. Shortly after its approval, the council OK’d retroactive, current and future pay increases for employees.
