Karson Klauer

Hollister Councilman Karson Klauer removed himself from the city’s marijuana ad hoc committee because he said he was spending too much time on it. The council at last week’s meeting accepted his resignation from the panel, and this week approved Mayor Ignacio Velazquez to replace him.

In an interview with the Free Lance, Klauer said his work on the medical marijuana ordinance has taken time away from his job as a Realtor. He recently spent 20 to 30 hours a week working on the ordinance, he said.

The city council position isn’t supposed to be a full-time job, and doesn’t pay as a full-time job, he noted.

On top of that, Klauer said he received calls from people in his district that weren’t interested in the ordinance. He said it doesn’t make sense to put in “a crazy number of hours” if his constituents aren’t interested in the ordinance.

Mayoral candidate Keith Snow questioned Klauer’s departure at Monday’s meeting.
