Hollister – The Board of Supervisors approved a 3.95 percent increase to garbage rates on Tuesday afternoon. The hike will apply to residents of unincorporated San Benito County and will take effect on Feb. 1.

For most county residents, that rate hike should add up to an extra 61 cents per month.

According to Mandy Rose, director of the county’s Integrated Waste Management Department, Proposition 218 would have required the county to reject the rate increases if it received formal protests from more than half of the affected ratepayers. However, Rose said she’d only received four protest letters. She added she addressed one of the letter-writers’ concerns by contacting them and enrolling them in the county’s hardship assistance program.

The annual rate increase is determined by a formula in the county’s contract with Norcal Waste Systems. The formula incorporates changes to a number of economic indicators, including labor, fuel and maintenance costs.

Supervisor Anthony Botelho voted against the increase.
