The results of the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle wine competition were announced last weekend. The Chronicle competition boasts itself as the “largest competition of American wines in the world.” More than 5,000 wines were entered in the 2011 contest by wineries from 23 states. This year’s competition concluded with a week of judging Friday at the Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds in Sonoma County.

The winners from San Benito County included the following: Pepper Tree Ranch won two awards, for a Viognier and petite Sirah; Hallcrest Vineyards won two awards, both for Cabernet Sauvignon varieties; Mosby Wines won bronze for a distilled brandy; Donati Family Vineyards won seven awards, for varieties ranging from Chardonnay to pinot gris, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends; Pietra Santa won eight awards, such as those for varieties of Sangiovese, Pinot noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
