Supervisor Margie Barrios suggested the idea for a lettuce festival.

Supervisors today received the 2012 crop report from the county agricultural commissioner, who called 2012 “a banner year” for agriculture in the county.
According to Agriculture Commissioner Ron Ross, the county increased its agricultural output 13 percent since last year, producing about $267 million in total agriculture value. It was the county’s highest output since 2007, when it produced $293 million in total value.
Much of the growth can be attributed to vegetable crops, including lettuce and spinach, but there was also higher yields for fruit.
Additionally, the crops grown in the county contributed an estimated $475 million to the state’s economy in 2012, said Ross.
Supervisor Margie Barrios called the report “very encouraging” and said there “should be a lettuce festival.”
