Hollister – Jaime De La Cruz returned to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, less than a month after receiving a kidney transplant.
Although De La Cruz said his energy and health are still only at “around 50, 70 percent,” he made it through most of the supervisors’ six-hour meeting. He left the meeting about half an hour before it ended, he said, because he was feeling tired.
“It’s been a matter of building my energy,” De La Cruz said. “If everything goes according to plan, I shouldn’t be missing any more meetings.”
De La Cruz received the transplant at the University of California, San Francisco, medical center on Feb. 3. It was his second kidney transplant. He told the supervisors Tuesday that his experience has reaffirmed the importance of organ donation programs.
“It really saves lives,” De La Cruz said. “I am a perfect example of the benefits of the organ donation program.”
Since the operation, De La Cruz has missed two board meetings.
Before receiving his latest kidney transplant, De La Cruz spent years undergoing nightly dialysis treatments to remove waste from his body.
