Phil Harris, co-star of the Emmy Award-winning reality television series “Deadliest Catch,” will visit local bars Saturday to meet fans and promote Alaskan Amber Beer.
The captain of the Cornelia Marie Alaskan crab fishing vessel featured on the Discovery Channel series will make the rounds at local vendors of the beer he helps promote.
Starting at 3 p.m., he will visit Glory Days Sports Pub, Legends Bar & Grill, and Rosy’s At the Beach, all on the 17000 block of Monterey Street in downtown Morgan Hill. He will visit each establishment for about an hour, and cap off his visit at Poppy’s Fish and Poultry, 30 East Third St., from about 6 to 10 p.m., according to Harris’ Web site www.captainphilharris.com.
Harris visited Morgan Hill about the same time last year, and Poppy’s owner Michael Castelan said about 600 people from all over the Bay Area visited. He expects a similar crowd this weekend.
Despite his on-screen demeanor as the gruff, chain-smoking captain of a crew that faces constant peril in the pursuit of Alaskan king crabs, Harris is “a really nice guy,” Castelan said.
“He’ll come and talk to everybody, shake hands, sign autographs,” said Castelan. “And he’ll get people down here to the city of Morgan Hill.”
Castelan and Harris have connections beyond their desire to sell Alaskan Amber Beer. Both are third-generation commercial fishermen, hail from the Seattle, Wash. area, and their families have known each other for several years, Castelan said.
Harris has parlayed his stardom from “Deadliest Catch,” now in its fifth season, into a marketing enterprise. He sells a variety of merchandise, including a new line of coffee, on his Web site www.captainphilharris.com.
