Editor,

Thanks for the story by Luke Roney to promote April as autism awareness month. It is tempting to remain anonymous, but there are benefits in reaching out to the community for understanding and awareness.

It can be difficult to ask for help, and we do not want to burden our community, but it is essential that autistic children receive assistance to learn how to live independently so that they can become self-confident adults who contribute to society.

Many families who are faced with a disability become exhausted and broke in dealing with it. It seems that insurance companies have no end to the excuses for avoiding reimbursement for recommended treatments. Social activity is limited and we rely heavily on family and friends who have made extraordinary efforts to help us work with Thomas. We are blessed with their help and we spend much of our resources working with our son and other families to provide a better quality of life for those with disabilities. We are also lucky to have a cooperative relationship with the Hollister School District that promotes communication and courage to face difficulties that can accompany autism.

Support groups can be beneficial in finding advice or a sympathetic ear from others with experience. It is essential to become an activist and advocate for your child. If you suspect that your child has a learning disability, don’t compound the problem with ignorance or denial. Seek professional help for an early diagnosis before they reach school age. The results of early educational intervention can be amazing!

The Autism Parent Club of San Benito County holds support meetings on the second Thursday of each month that are open to all interested parties. There is no charge for attending. For more information, contact Karen at (831) 637-0750.
