Most golfers know that when playing into the wind, you must add more club. What most don’t understand is the importance of keeping the ball low and under the wind.

A person might normally hit a 3-iron, but because they are going into the wind, they want to add a couple of clubs so they hit a 5-wood instead. That 5-wood will go much higher than a 3-iron. It defeats the purpose.

The 3-iron will probably go further in this case, because it will go lower and stay under the wind, where it is affected much less. I always try to teach that on windy days, you should try to hit nothing higher than a 7-iron on approach shots to the green. You are really asking for trouble hitting those high lofted clubs up in the air. They are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

Furthermore, place the ball a little further back in your stance. This will de-loft your club and make it easier to hit the ball a little lower.
