The width of your stance has a great impact on the overall
success of your swing
The width of your stance has a great impact on the overall success of your swing. The width of your stance should vary, depending on the lie and club selection, for you to be successful. The main idea is that the wider the stance, the more balance you will have during the swing. But let’s examine these ideas a little closer.
It’s really important to note that the longer the club (i.e. driver) the wider your stance should be. This is simply because a longer club will tend to throw your balance off easier than a shorter one would. The wider stance helps combat this.
The main error I see, though, is many players never adjust their stance to the club. Narrow it down with shorter clubs and widen it with longer clubs. The longer club needs more push off your back foot to the front foot, so balance is more of an issue. The shorter irons need less leg drive, so a narrower stance is better.
Also, narrow your stance a little on an uphill lie so it’s easier to push your weight to your left leg, even though gravity is not helping you.
