Around this time every year I try to help golfers out by putting together a Christmas wish list to slip to that special person in your life as a hint. Every year there seems to be some hot item that you just need to have. This year, I would say there are a few extremely warm ones.

GPS systems for golf are popular. You may know them as a SkyCaddie, as that was one of the first brands out. It gives you the yardage from everywhere on the golf course. The top of the line models even give you yardage to particular points on the course, like sand traps and hazards.

Range finders are also popular. You just focus on your target and it gives you the yardage.

The cons of both items is this: With a range finder, you must have a steady hand or it won’t work when you have a blind shot or your target is otherwise obstructed, while GPS systems require a yearly subscription to download the courses you want to play.

Another item that you should have by now is a hybrid. If you don’t have a hybrid in your bag, your playing partners that have one have a serious advantage. While there are many degrees in loft to choose from, just remember to make sure it “fits,” meaning it goes longer than the longest iron you carry and shorter than the shortest wood you carry.

Last thing to mention for the serious golfer is you may soon want to invest in clubs with conforming grooves. The USGA is requiring competing players to have confroming grooves by 2012. For the casual golfer, you have several more years to comply. If you happen to be playing in a tour event next year — who knows, maybe one of you might — you have to have conforming grooves by Jan. 1, 2010.

Hope Santa leaves something special under the tree for you this year.
