As I mentioned last week, winter golf has its own set of challenges. One of the hardest to overcome is your own memory.

You know what happens to a certain shot for the rest of the year. But when you try that during wet or cold conditions, you aren’t as successful.

First of all, air is heavier (more moisture) this time of year, so the ball doesn’t fly as far as it would in the middle of July. That means that your favorite par 3 that you usually hit a 6-iron on may take a 5-iron when it’s cold and/or wet.

The topography of the golf course is also a little wetter and slower, so that shot that you would hit to bounce and kick from right to left onto the green is now stopping short.

Put your memory aside and try to carry the ball a bit farther now and it should help.

Once on the green, the greens won’t generally break as much in the winter because they have a little more moisture. Moisture slows the greens down. Slower greens hold their line more than fast greens, so instead of playing three inches of break on that putt this weekend, you better cut it back to two inches.

Remember, overcoming these small challenges isn’t difficult. You just have to think a little more before you execute the shot.
