This is an open letter to the community.

Volunteers are needed on Thursday September 9. The South County Council of the United Way Silicon Valley invites you to lend a hand (or many hands) to a United Way agency in your community.

These non-profit agencies provide the things we often don’t think about until we need them – such as senior services, children’s programs, domestic violence counseling and emergency shelter for families who have lost their homes. Many of the agencies that provide these services, right here in our community, have unmet needs. Volunteers can make a difference.

Thursday September 9, 2004 is the United Way Day of Caring. On or before that day, we invite South County businesses and service organizations to adopt one of the many projects that will help local nonprofits. Paint a day room, plant flowers at a shelter, or help repair a basketball hoop.

You can schedule your workday for a weekday or weekend, and choose among a list of projects requiring different skills and abilities. By donating just a little bit of time, you can make an impact.

Two local companies, Hospira and Paramit, have already stepped forward to help. Their employees donated a Saturday in May to repaint the main recreation room at the Mt. Madonna YMCA Senior Center in Morgan Hill. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and are making a big difference to the seniors who go to the center for meals and other activities.

There are eighteen United Way agencies with services in South County communities, providing everything from seniors’ services to emergency assistance to childcare.

Whether or not you are currently running a United Way Campaign, we invite you to participate in Day of Caring.

For a list of projects with agencies in Morgan Hill, San Martin, and Gilroy, please contact Mark Tolley at (408) 345-4306, [email protected].

Thank you for joining the Day of Caring!
