Dear Editor,
I was surprised to see the full page ad for the gambling casino project; especially the barbs against our board of supervisors.
The gambling group claims that the board did not get all the facts before making a decision on what is now being described as a ‘destination resort’ that will “create thousands of jobs and millions of dollars.”
The facts are:
The gambling group has had a representative speak at each board of supervisors meeting where there has been public input
The supervisors have not made a decision, but did set aside a date for a county-wide summit, after which they will decide
The supervisors did state their individual opinions at this time … opinions that reflect our county
Anyone at the meeting would have noted the very thorough research summarized by one board member – research far more extensive than selected ‘facts’ intended to persuade the less-wary.
If you were shopping for a new car, one that would need to serve you for a lifetime, with a sales contract that could not be broken, you would begin with independent reviews and consumer reports. Initially, you would rule out cars that didn’t come close to meeting your needs. Finally, as your search and knowledge are refined, you would begin to shop dealerships. Except in our community setting, the car salesperson is not interested in meeting any of your unique needs except that required to sell you one of their cars; and boy can they sell!.
Our supervisors carefully reviewed the independent reviews and consumer reports, along with information from those communities which have already been ‘sold’. That’s good government. At this point they appear to have determined that the gambling project doesn’t come close to fitting our county’s needs. Why go to the ‘dealership’ to be further ‘sold’ on something that independent research has already demonstrated doesn’t fit?
I would have expected the gambling group to have respectfully thanked our supervisors for sparing them the time and money for wining and dining, by being upfront with them in representing our community. Instead, they have contrived a phone ‘poll’ I suspect is professionally designed to have the specific result of making it appear like our county is for the gambling casino! I resent being manipulated like that. Don’t you?
