After rain-soaked Monday, teams try to wrap up TCALs today
SALINAS

Both of San Benito’s doubles teams remain in the mix after rain suspended play at the Tri-County Athletic League Tournament on Monday at Salinas High School, where competition was halted for the second day in a row due to the heavy rains.

Play was suspended on Saturday, the first day of the tournament, just a few games into the opening matches, San Benito coach Ed Cecena said.

Organizers will resume the TCAL Tournament today, Tuesday, at 12:30 p.m., at Salinas High School – an earlier time in order to get all of the remaining matches in.

The No. 2-seeded doubles team of Amanda Marshall and Abbie Woods are still alive, though, as is the doubles pairing of Crystal Perreira and Vanessa Casalegno, despite the inclement weather.

Marshall and Woods are already through to the semifinals after they received a bye in the first round, then defeated Gilroy’s Cristina Carrillo and Viviana Mendez 6-2, 6-0 in round two.

Although their semifinal opponent has yet to have been decided, Marshall and Woods could perhaps be playing their San Benito teammates when play is resumed on Tuesday.

That scenario, however, is contingent upon the doubles duo of Perreira and Casalegno pulling out a victory in the quarterfinals.

Perreira and Casalegno are currently in the middle of a match that was suspended Monday against Notre Dame’s April Harvey and Brook Carrachiolli, the Spirits’ No. 1 doubles team.

Previously at the tournament, Perreira and Casalegno defeated Tempestt Edward and Mariah Vega of Alvarez, 6-4. 6-4.

In singles, both of San Benito’s players have been eliminated from contention.

Hayley Barker lost in the first round to No. 3 Alexis Pressas of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-0.

Bri Ahumada-Wolfsmith managed to win her first-round match when she defeated Alisal’s Amanda Salazar 6-2, 6-3. But Ahumada-Wolfsmith, up against No. 1 Taryn Andrews of Salinas, lost her second-round match 6-0, 6-2.

Only the champions in each bracket advance to the Central Coast Section Tournament, scheduled for next week.
