After falling in its first game of the tournament, the Hollister Earthquakes girls soccer team rebounded to win three straight and finish in third place at the CYSA District II Spring Cup last weekend in Milpitas.

Maddison Alipaz and Alma Cadena led the Earthquakes with two goals apiece, while Anjelica Collins and Alexis Hernandez each added one.

“The girls played with courage, strength and determination,” head coach Ted Vandenberg said. “We are all very proud of their accomplishment.”

Teams from Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties were all present at the Spring Cup tournament, and Hollister managed to finish strong after it fell early in its first game.

Losing by a 5-1 margin to the Milpitas MXG, which would eventually finish runner-up in the bracket, the Earthquakes bounced back with a 2-0 shutout of the Orchard Valley Wildcats and a 2-0 shutout of the San Mateo Fusion.

Playing in the third-place consolation game as a result, Hollister continued the trend when it dispatched the Sunnyvale Alliance Extreme, 1-0.

The Earthquakes will return to the pitch on Aug. 1-2 for the Magic Cup at the Morgan Hill Sports Complex.
