The owners of the Elegant Touch Restaurant in downtown Hollister today announced it would be the final day of business after seven years.

Owners Don Alvarez and Paul Espinosa announced in an e-mail and on the business’ website that today would be the last for the establishment at Sixth and San Benito streets. The two had owned the restaurant for seven years, while it has been a downtown landmark for about 17.

Elegant Touch for years has been a popular lunch spot – known largely for its sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts.

“We thank our regular customers most of all, for the support that they have given us over the seven years that we have owned this establishment, and we hope that you will frequent Hollister’s other downtown businesses and establishments to help them avoid this same fate,” the owners wrote in the letter.

The sudden announcement comes as many Hollister businesses and workers are struggling through the recession. The decision, however, also happened just a few years after the owners had talked of more than doubling the space by expanding next door. In 2006, Alvarez had noted how the business had experienced steady growth, with 10 percent most years and 25 or 30 percent that year, shortly before the economy took a tumble.

The owners could not be reached immediately before publication.
