About the incident that occurred at the Hollister-In-Black vigil July 1, mentioned by Marvin Jones in a recent letter: Yes, one member of our vigil lost her cool and hit the visitor with her purse. I was the next in line in the vigil and I was the one who restrained her.
I have to correct an assertion of Marvin’s. He said, “The visitor demonstrated peace and tolerance and the People-In-Black did not.” Well, aside from the woman mentioned, no member of Hollister-In-Black offered the visitor any violence, disrespect, or other negative word or deed. I don’t know what the visitor said to other vigil members, but what he said in my hearing was, “You love Hitler, don’t you? You killed Christ. You’d kill Christ and you’d kill me, but not Bin Laden.” (I may not have the words exactly right; I was busy trying to protect him from violence.)
Marvin says the man “supposedly” asked our support for Christians and opposed our support for Moslems. Maybe he did. I didn’t hear that, and Marvin didn’t either. Marvin was across the street.
I don’t know the religious affiliations of all the Hollister-In-Black vigilers, but I do know they include active member of the Catholic, Presbyterian, and Quaker churches, all of which I am told are Christian Churches. As for our “support for the Moslems,” we stand in support of all victims of violence, Christian, Moslems, Jewish, whatever. We do not support terrorism or killing of innocents, regardless of who does it.
Actually, I think Marvin and I do share a common goal – an end to terrorism. But we have some powerful differences on the best way to reach that goal.
