San Benito routs Branham High 64-9 Friday in the opening round
of the Dons Club Holiday Tournament in Campbell

On Tuesday, the San Benito girls basketball team nearly held Harbor High to single digits when they defeated the Pirates 70-10 at Mattson Gym in Hollister.

But on Friday, in the opening round of the Dons Club Holiday Tournament at Del Mar High in Campbell, the Lady ‘Balers did one better.

Vanessa Farias scored 17 points, Megan Halstead added 12 and the San Benito Lady ‘Balers easily downed Branham High 64-9 in the first round of the holiday tournament.

The Lady ‘Balers, which improve to 6-3 overall this year, shut Branham out in the first quarter 19-0, and even carried a comfortable 37-2 lead to halftime.

San Benito now advances to the second round on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., where they will take on either Santa Clara or Westmont.

“I’m glad we’re in the winners bracket and we’re gonna play a tough team, either Santa Clara or Westmont,” San Benito head coach David Kaplansky said. “Our goal is to get to the championship game (on Wednesday) … and we’ve got some good teams ahead of us.”

Post player Victoria Aguilera had eight points for San Benito in the win, while Kelsey Russell turned in six. In total, San Benito had 10 different scorers in the game.
