It was no surprise that North Salinas dominated the Tri-County Athletic League first-team selections.

After all, the Vikings were unbeaten and mostly untested during a stellar season in which they outscored their TCAL foes by an average of 21.3 points. In fact, North Salinas not only had three girls on the first team but the Most Valuable Player in Briana Mathews. Joining Mathews on the first team were Dominque Hill and Edthel Lugo. Darren Jackson garnered Coach of the Year honors.

San Benito sophomore Vanessa Farias was one of the 10 first-team selections. The 5-6 guard was second in the league in scoring with a 13.8 average.

Other first-team selections were Mia Musones and Hannah Larick of Salinas, Nathalie Godoy of Notre Dame, Dana Schoeneman of Gilroy, Kristal Gutierrez of Alisal and Chelsea Von Winning of Alvarez.

Two other Haybalers gained honors. Junior Elena Fata, the league’s fifth leading scorer (12.5) and tied for first in three-point goals (17) was on the honorable mention list. Morgan O’Laughlin was San Benito’s representative on the “Pursuing Victory with Honors” team.

The ‘Balers finished 8-15 overall, 5-7 in TCAL. Their highlight was defeating Salinas, which finished tied for second in the league.
