May is the month for high school proms and also a potentially dangerous night for teen pregnancies according to the “judge” in “It Takes Two,” a short film that airs on CMAP TV channels 19 and 20 beginning Sunday, April 30 and running through the first half of May. The film, produced by San Benito Superior Court, focuses on four young people out on a prom night including a post prom private party. Two of the teens find themselves in financial and legal troubles and sitting in a courtroom a year later as a result of some poor planning and actions the night of the prom.

CMAP will show the film at various times of day and night chosen to accommodate teen viewers and their parents. While not a “Hollywood” film and thus not rated, viewer discretion is advised and parental previewing encouraged.

“The court made this movie to provide information about the cost to young people in terms of loss of freedoms and control of money earned when two young people have a child they can’t afford and didn’t plan on,” said Jean Flanagan, the court’s video project producer and the present commissioner (judge) for child support cases in San Benito County.

“We did this in a way to engage the attention of teens, using teen voices, and teen experiences, as the medium rather than coming from older adult viewpoints.” There is no “talking head” giving a moral message. “That’s not the job of the courts,” Flanagan insists, “we’ve depicted a fictional situation based on realities we see in the courtroom that are very difficult for young parents and their own parents and siblings. We hope young people will learn from, and talk about, what happened to the teens in the video and understand some serious consequences most people never consider when they choose to be sexually active.”

For a full schedule of viewing times for the week of April 30 to May 6, 2006 see the CMAP listings that appear elsewhere in The Pinnacle.
