Firefighters respond to apartment blaze
Hollister and San Benito firefighters responded to an apartment fire at 10 a.m. Feb. 20 at the Lado del Rio Apartments on Nash Road. Three fire engines and two paramedics arrived on scene in response.
Officers quickly put out the burn in an upstairs apartment, though much smoke and burn damage had already happened to the building. Around an upstairs window, the outside of the yellow building was charred black.
By 10:15 a.m., a CalStar helicopter had landed in the middle of Nash Road to take one resident to an out of area hospital. Another resident was taken away by ambulance 20 minutes later.
While some officers and paramedics attended to residents, others remained inside the apartment to remove damaged household items. Volunteer firefighters tossed smoke-damaged clothing and other items from the upstairs window, including a burnt baby seat.
As more neighbors and passersby gathered on the streets, the firefighters put up caution tape around the damaged building. American Red Cross disaster relief workers arrived on the scene and interviewed the residents and neighbors.
