Amanda Lima surprised no one but herself Saturday at Bolado Park.

Lima, a 17-year-old Hollister resident, was selected as Miss San Benito Rodeo for 2003 and will represent the annual Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo June 27-29 at the Bolado Park Fairgrounds and the association throughout the year.

Lima said she was surprised she won because entering the contest, she wasn’t very confident of her chances.

“This is my first time ever trying out for any rodeo queen competition,” she said. “It’s a whole new experience for me.”

Lima was chosen over two other San Benito County teenagers, Amber Cooper, 16, and Kari Thul, 18, both Hollister residents.

Lima credited her horse trainer, Ramona Koch, who helped her prepare for the competition.

“She really helped me to learn and showed me what would be required by the horse show,” Lima said.

As rodeo queen, Lima will attend numerous community events, the first being the Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo membership barbeque on June 22.

Lima, who was born in 1986, participates in rodeos, and focuses on team roping, goat tying, ribbon roping, the rescue race and steer daubing. She also enjoys working cattle. She plays the piano and is involved in FFA activities.
