Sacramento City College exploded for 550 yards of total offense on its way to a 40-23 victory over the Gavilan Rams at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex on Saturday night.
The loss left the Rams at 1-4 with the Coast Conference schedule opening Saturday at 7 p.m. at home against the De Anza Dons.
Gavilan, coming off a 73-point effort over Contra Costa the previous Saturday, took a 14-7 lead in the first quarter when sophomore corner Anthony Pittman ran an interception 92 yards to paydirt with 5:24 left. Gus Silva, who made 10 point-after attempts in the Contra Costa contest, added the point-after.
After Sacramento City pulled even at 14-14 on a 14-yard run from Darren Harvey late in the first quarter, the Rams again took the lead when Ivan Lopez booted a 24-yard field goal with 12:11 left in the half.
The Panthers responded with a 19-yard run to open a 33-17 advantage by the close of the third quarter.
“The two touchdowns in the second quarter changed the game’s momentum,” Gavilan head coach John Lango said.
“We made some mistakes on offense and that ended up giving Sacramento a short field for their go-ahead touchdown,” Lango added. “When they scored, it seemed to give the momentum to Sacramento and they came right back with another touchdown.”
Victor Spencer gave Sacramento City a 21-17 lead with 8:23 left in the half with a 3-yard touchdown catch from Cody Allen. Kalin Carlos bolted over from one yard out with 1:10 to go to make it 27-17. Ram James Gaynor blocked James Ward’s point-after attempt.
Spencer pulled in an 8-yard touchdown toss from Allen with 11:33 left in the third quarter for a 33-17 cushion.
Gavilan completed its scoring with a 33-yard touchdown catch by Victor Sapp from back-up quarterback Matt Edwards on the final play of the quarter.
Cameron Smith, who opened the game’s scoring with a 6-yard touchdown rush for the Panthers, capped the scoring with a 1-yard scoring run with 5:02 left to play.
“Our defense was tired in the fourth quarter,” Lango said. “We ran 60 plays from scrimmage, Sacramento 86. We weren’t tackling very well, trying to make too many arm tackles.”
Mike Incardona threw for 133 yards on 9 of 20 passing for the Rams, including a 69-yard touchdown pass to Frank Lawson III 3:13 into the game.
Edwards received his most playing time in five games, completing 11 of 17 tries for 89 yards. Sapp paced the receivers with 94 yards, while Sean Hale led the Gavilan runners with 41 yards in 10 carries. Gavilan finished with 297 yards of total offense.
