A meeting to discuss the functionality and feasibility of a football program at Anzar High School has been scheduled for Monday in San Juan Bautista.

The meeting is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m., and will be held at the District Annex, located at 2300 San Juan Highway in San Juan Bautista.

The public is welcome to attend in what is the first meeting regarding a football program at the San Juan Bautista high school.

In December, a board committee was established to evaluate football at Anzar High School, which currently offers girls volleyball and cross country during the fall months, the latter of which both boys and girls can compete.

The committee is a “diverse group,” said Mike Perez, who is on the football committee and also a member of the Aromas – San Juan Unified School District Board of Trustees.

The committee has a wide range of voices, Perez added, including that of students and community members.

Monday’s meeting will act as a jumping-off point for the committee, and will point them in the direction of “where we need to go,” Perez said.

There is no deadline or scheduled date for when the football committee will present its findings to the school district.

The Anzar campus, meanwhile, already has an existing football field, including goal posts, after the San Benito Cardinals of American Youth Football and Cheer broke ground on the San Juan Bautista campus last April to create a home football field.

Anzar, a Division V school of approximately 401 students, plays the majority of its sports within the Coastal Athletic League.

The CAL, meanwhile, offers an eight-man football league during the fall season, which currently includes member schools Marina, Crystal Springs Uplands, Pinewood School, Woodside Priory School, Trinity Christian (formerly Calvary Christian) and Anchorpoint Christian.

Currently, only San Benito High School in Hollister offers a prep football program in San Benito County.
