The Vikings earned their first win of the season by using an improved defense and aggressive offense to keep the ball in the Bears’ territory for most of the game. In the first quarter, Anthony Sanchez and Ivan Mendoza were influential in moving the ball downfield to keep the Bears’ defense at bay. On defense, the Vikings challenged the Bears with quick take-downs by Anthony Martin, Joshua Zapien, Joseph Frank, and Bobby Viramontes. The first quarter ended without a score for either team.

The second quarter began with an Andrew Montoya 25-yard run, giving the Vikings their first touchdown.

Soon after, a fumble recovery by Examuel Quezada returned possession to the Vikings, who then kept the ball for most of the quarter. The Vikings moved downfield thanks to a quarterback keeper by Chris Soto. Campbell finally stopped the drive, but Sky Freer’s 20-yard punt pinned the Bears back against their end zone.

With tackels by Mendoza, Sanchez, Viramontes, Isaac Gutierrez, and Victor Cabrera, the Vikings’ defense stayed strong in the third quarter. Thanks to stiff defense the score remained 6-0 at halftime.

In the fourth quarter, Hollister’s offense again started to move downfield.

Mendoza and Zapien took the ball up the middle for first downs as the Vikings began to move the ball. Less than three minutes into the quarter, with Martin and Nate Greene blocking, Mendoza scored the Vikings’ second touchdown.

On the next Bears’ drive, a big hit by Frank forced another fumble that was recovered by Zapien. Montoya then executed a surprise reverse with Zapien and Mendoza, and gave the ball to Sanchez, who ran 25 yards for the Vikings third and final touchdown.

“We finally played a full four quarters,” coach Frank Montoya said. “And we really controlled the line of scrimmage.”

On a muggy, sprinkling day, the Vikings shut out the Campbell Bears.

Andres Soto electrified the crowd on the first series with a breakaway run up the side for 20 yards, bringing the the ball to the15-yard line. The Vikings caught a break on a quick pass from quarterback Brad Sparrer went through Adam Mendoza’s arms, off the helmet of a Bear, and into Mendoza’s arms to gain another ten yards.

On the next play, Cameron Gomez took the hand off to the right side, and thanks to outstanding blocks by the offensive line, walked into the end zone. Soto’s kick for the point after was good, and Hollister led 8-0 just minutes into the contest.

The rest of the game was marked by a tough Viking defense. After a quick series where Campbell was unable to move the ball, Dimarco Delcurto rushed the fake punt and landed a solid tackle, giving the Vikings outstanding field position at the 10-yard line.

A catch by John Martinez brought the ball closer, and Michael Zaragoza took the hand off and ran through a big hole opened up by Cade Neece and Mark Martinezthe for another Viking touchdown. Sparrer connected with tight end Tristan Wahl for the point after, giving Hollister a 15-0 lead.

The second quarter of the game featured more hard hitting Vikings’ defense and a well-orchestrated offense. Marcus Guevara and Gomez ate up the clock. Medina extended the lead to 21-0 with an inside hand off.

With five minutes left in the half, Zaragoza blasted over two defenders for a 10-year gain, and Aidan Pung had a solid block to help Guevara get to the outside for more yardage.

Gomez scooted around a few Bear defenders to get the ball to the Campbell 20-yard line.

The drive continued through the air, but the Vikings eventually turned it over on downs.

On Campbell’s first play, Delcurto forced a fumble that the Vikings recovered the 26-yard line. With eight seconds left in the half, quarterback Hunter Raquet, on an option play, tossed the ball to Soto, who ran to the sideline and tip-toed past four Bear defenders and into the end zone. Going into halftime, Hollister led the contest 28-0.

With a huge lead, coach Gino Andrade gave everyone a turn to run the ball in the second half. Hunter Torres, AJ Pasillas, Kane DeAlba, Neece, Juan Ramos, Albert Rodriquez, Michael Esparza and Tanner Cason each contributed yards to the Hollister offense.

The Vikings did not score but the Campbell offense didn’t touch the field at all during the third quarter because of the time-consuming Viking offense. The Bears finally got the chance in the fourth quarter and earned their only first down of the contest. But tackles by Neece, Wahl, and Diego Fisher took all the energy out of the Bears drive. Linebackers Zaragoza and Guevara had two tackles each to turn the ball back over to the Vikings.

“We played a complete game today,” Andrade said. “Mendoza, and Sanchez did great on their first catches. Pasillas had a nice run and the (offensive) line improved so much. Now we need to get ready for Salinas next week.”

It was a tale of two halves during the Vikings contest against the Campbell Bears.

In the first half, the Bears controlled the ball, but could only score once thanks to a fumble recovery by Nick Trimble, and several good plays by the Hollister defense. Offensively, the Vikings had several good runs by Adrian Fisher and Marcus Galvan, but Hollister was not able to score. At halftime, the Vikings trailed 8-0.

But in the second half, the Vikings came out fired up. The defense struck quickly as Jackson Starke stripped ball from a Bears runner at the 15-yard line, and the Vikings scored two plays later when Josh Nehme connected with Dylan Grieg in the end zone.

Trailing 8-6, Galvan made a touchdown-saving tackle on the Bears next series. Trimble ending the drive by intercepting the ball.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Nehme ran a quarterback keeper to the outside, finding a hole for an 80-yard run to the end zone. The Vikings took their first lead of the day 13-8.

On the kickoff, the Bears broke a long gain but Robert Gaspar made a touchdown-saving tackle. The Bears didn’t seem to have the same momentum after huge hits by Hunter Nye forced big losses.

Nehme recovered a fumble at midfield to give Hollister the ball once again. Two plays later, Starke galloped 50 yards to the end zone, extending the Vikings lead to 19-8.

The Bears had two more chances with the ball but Hollister stopped them with great defensive efforts by Nye, Tanner Okerson and Jonathan Mendoza. Hollister chose not to sit on its lead as the clock wound down. Daniel Hopkins completed a pass to Jadian Fisch, who made a gallant effort to get the ball in the end zone but was stopped short to end the game.

Next week

Hollister returns home on Sunday to play teams from Salinas and San Mateo.

Games begin at 9:30 a.m. at Andy Hardin field.
