Vikings 13, Jets 12

The Hollister Pee Wee Vikings were anxious to redeem themselves after a tough loss last week. The first quarter was marked by a tenacious Vikings’ defense that gave the offense time to strategize. Tristan Wahl and Ishmael Medina shined again with multiple sacks and behind-the-line tackles. Sparks of a run game by Dimarco Delcurto and Marcus Guevara ignited a Hunter Raquet pass to Diego Fisher a few possessions later.

Below is this week’s edition of The San Benito Score:

This 40-yard bomb, and point after by Andres Soto, would settle the Vikings into a tentative 7-0 lead. The Jets fired back with a quarterback sweep to the outside and a run up the middle, but each time a Viking defender would step in and make a solid tackle.

Wahl, linebackers Delcurto, Guevara and Michael Zaragoza, would crashed the line of scrimmage throughout the game. Kane DeAlba and Michael Esparza were in on defense as well, and helped gang up on Jet runners.

The Viking scored again on a handoff to Delcurto, who went 12 yards up the field and shed a few tackles to get into the end zone. Although the point after was no good, and despite three interceptions in the first half, the Vikings led the Jets 13-0.

In the second half, the Jets quickly capitalized with a pass to score their first points of the game. The Viking defense kept the Jets from earning the point after.

Runs by Guevara, Soto and Medina kick started the Vikings’ offense. Quarterback Raquet connected with Medina and Fisher, but a fumbled ball gave the Jets another possession and another shot to score. The Jets threw for a 40-yard bomb. Now ahead by just a point, the Vikings’ Wahl and Esparza pressured the quarterback as Soto stepped in to stop the conversion attempt. The stop gave the Vikings their first win of the season.

Vikings 31, Jets 0

Coming off a tough loss the week before, the Vikings were determined to win, and Hollister dominated the game from start to finish.

The Vikings started strong after stopping the Jets first drive thanks to big tackles by Tanner Okerson and Josh Nehme. But the Vikings biggest play was yet to come. On fourth down, Tanner Okerson blocked the punt giving Hollister the ball on the Jets 5-yard line.

On second down and goal, quarterback Daniel Hopkins snuck into the end zone with the assistance of the powerful offensive line consisting of Josh Martin, Clay Schwall, Nick Redmond, Devin Beltran, Travis Roy, and Miguel Covarrubias.

After a quick series by the Jets, thanks to tackles by Dyllan Grieg, Okerson and Kyle Cameron, the Vikings scored again when Nehme, now playing quarterback, connected with Hopkins on a 50-yard touchdown pass.

With 40 seconds left in the half, the Vikings’ Marcus Galvan recovered a fumble on the kickoff to give Hollister one more chance to score.

Despite a 30-yard run by Nick Trimble, the Viking were unable to extend their lead.

In the second half, the Vikings scored again after two huge tuns by Nehme and Hunter Nye and a Hopkins pass found Cameron’s arms deep in the end zone. Hunter Nye rushed in the point after to give the Vikings a 19-0 lead.

In the Vikings next possession, Nehme connected with Hopkins again for a 40-yard gain to the Jets 30-yard line. On the following play, Nye caught a screen pass and outran the Jets secondary to add six more points.

Hoping to spoil the shutout, the Jets advanced to the Vikings’ 10-yard line with 21 seconds left in the game. But a Jets fumble was scooped up by Cameron who then sprinted 90 yards to score the last touchdown to end the game with a 31-0 Hollister win.

Head coach Jeff Valenzuela was ecstatic with the play of the entire team on both sides of the ball.

“They came out after a loss last week with positive attitudes and the hard work paid dividends,” Valenzuela said.

In a game dominated by defense, the score ended in a tie when the Vikings mounted a late drive to counter Monterey’s lone touchdown, which occurred early in the contest. Hollister’s game-tying drive consisted of good runs by fullback Jonny Gonzalez and quarterback Ernesto Sanchez. Sanchez scored the lone touchdown by sneaking over the 1-yard line with less than a minute in the game.

Head Coach Larry Cascio heaped lavish praise on his defensive unit, that shut down the Jets except for an early breakaway touchdown run.

Safety Leo St. John made two game-saving tackles, one on a breakaway run and another on a screen pass where the receiver had gotten past everyone else. Aiden Lyon also made a game-saving tackle in the waning seconds of the game, chasing a breakaway runner from behind to prevent Monterey from scoring a game-winning touchdown.

Blaze McShane, Diego Ramirez, Jordan Plesek & Matthew Hernandez shut the Jets down at the line on most plays, and Sanchez made a QB sack on the last play of the game.

Jets 18, Vikings 6

The Vikings defense played well for most of the game, but the team could not get their first win as the Jets did a good job holding Viking runners in check. The Jets scored the first touchdown two minutes into the game, but the Vikings countered with a good run by Joshua Zapien, and a quarterback fake by Andrew Montoya to bring the ball to Monterey’s 18-yard line. Ivan Mendoza scored the touchdown to tie the score.

In the second quarter, Vikings showed an improved defense, pushing Monterey back to the Vikings’ 10-yard line, with great tackles by Rudy Morales, and a sack by Anthony Sanchez. Despite their efforts, Monterey fought through the Vikings’ defense and scored for another six points with a minute left in the half.

Hollister tried to come back with an offensive attack as Zapien recovered the kickoff and then took the ball to the Vikings’ 38-yard line. Chris Soto carried the ball for another huge gain, and Sam Smallwood had quarterback sneak, but the Vikings were stopped by Monterey as the first half expired.

The third quarter began with a huge gain of yardage for the Vikings, as the kick-off was recovered by Smallwood who returned the ball to the Jets’ 46-yard line. But Monterey’s defense held strong.

Smallwood tried a quarterback fake, and Montoya ran for 17 yards to give the Vikings another first down, but it wasn’t enough, and Jets regained the ball on the Vikings’ 47-yard line. The Jest score quickly, taking the ball around the outside and with 5:15 minutes left in the third quarter.

The Jets defense dominated the second half, pushing Hollister in reverse on many plays. But the Viking defense valiantly held Monterey, preventing any more scoring thanks to great efforts by Joseph Frank, Isaac Gutierrez, Examuel Quezada, Bobby Viramontes, Morales, and Victor Zendejas.

Hollister made one more big offensive play, as Montoya threw the ball to Sky Freer to get to the Jets’ 34-yard line.

No Score

The Tiny Mites scrimmaged at Monterey on Saturday and the team put on a display of offensive firepower as Junior Cortez crossed the goal line once and Donnie Gutirrez scored twice. Cortez’s 20-yard TD run was set up when Julien Garcia broke a 35-yard run.

Coach Trenton Finister was very pleased with the play of the offensive line, who provided great blocking to spring the runners. Devin Homen did a great job in his first game at center, and the other linemen, who included Mitchell Sanchez, Ladanian Gaytan, Juan Cortez, Elias Escamilla, William Sachau, Gabriel Torres and Isaac Barragan.
