Hollister’s Junior Pee Wees got their offense in gear against the Coastside Cougars a week after being shut out. The Vikings scored on their first offensive series as halfback Matthew Trimble made a 36-yard run to paydirt. Fullback Jonny Gonzalez ran in the point after to make it a 7-0 Hollister lead. The defensive effort, led by Gonzalez and defensive tackle Jordan Plesek, was equally spectacular.

Hollister scored again quickly as Gonzalez burst through holes opened up by offensive linemen Chris Pritchett, Isaias Rivera, Angel Amescua, Matthew Hernandez and Diego Ramirez and charged 52 yards for the Vikings second score. Ernesto Sanchez run on the conversion made it 14-0.

The Viking defense couldn’t even get back on the field as Gonzalez stole the ball right out of a Coastside kick returners arms, and Hollister’s offense was back in business on the Cougars 44 yard line.

After Sanchez ran for a first down, Aiden Lyon then broke outside for a 32-yard scoring run. Gonzalez added a one-point conversion run to close the scoring with 2:29 left in the first half.

The defense maintained a shutout as Blaze McShane made many tackles, and Leo St.John saved a Cougar touchdown with an open field tackle on a breakaway runner. Hollister would go on to win 21-0.

Junior Midget- San Jose Saints 26, Hollister Vikings 14

By Tom Vivian

The San Jose Saints brought their ball control offense to Hollister on Saturday and controlled the ball enroute to a 26-14 win.

The Saints demonstrated great discipline and execution right from the start of the game as they embarked on a time-consuming drive that gave them a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

The Vikings tried to strike back through the air as quarterback Josh Nehme completed a pass to Hunter Nye, but Nye was stopped short of a first down. Hollister’s defense dug in its heels on the Saints second series as Jacob Zamora made a backfield tackle, Jonathan Mendoza sacked the quarterback, and Marcus Galvan made a big tackle on fourth down on an outside sweep.

Hollister got the ball back in good field position, but the Saints defense held fast. Punter Evyn Moreno booted one of several good kicks, and the Saints were pinned back deep as Kyle Cameron tackled the San Jose returner on the 3-yard line.

Hollister got the ball back in great field position after tackles by Jackson Starke and Zamora, and this time the Vikings capitalized. Galvan broke outside for a 25-yard run to the 3 yard line, then Tanner Okerson plowed into the end zone to tie the game. But the momentum reversed immediately as the Saints returned the kickoff deep into Hollister territory, and eventually scored to take a 12-6 halftime lead.

San Jose kept the momentum in the third quarter as they sacked Moreno after a bad snap, and scored again to take a 20-6 lead. They scored again on another short drive to extend their lead to 26-6.

Hollister’s defense stiffened to keep the game within reach as Robert Gaspar and Marcos Flores made several tackles, and Dyllan Grieg recovered a fumble that was forced by a blindside hit by Nick Trimble.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Vikings fired up their passing offense again as Nehme connected on a bomb to Starke for a 30 yard gain. Nehme then found Daniel Hopkins in the end zone to reduce the margin to 26-14.

Pee Wee – Coastside Cougars 16, Hollister Vikings 0

By Samantha Zaragoza

The Hollister Vikings Pee Wee football team came to their home field on a bright Saturday in September poised to face the Coastside Cougars. The first quarter was a scramble of short runs and defensive stands to hold the score to 0-0. The defense was led by Tristan Wahl, Marcus Guevara, Michael Zaragoza and IIshmael Medina.

In the second quarter, Viking quarterback Hunter Raquet found a rhythm with Vikings’ first-year player, Diego Fisher, for a nice 9-yard run early in the second quarter, and Andres Soto had two booming punts to push the Cougars further into their territory.

But going into the half the score remained tied 0-0.

In the second half, the Vikings offense tried to step up the run. On a quarterback keeper, Albert Rodriguez blocked well to help Raquet gain a first down. On the next play, a missed handoff was stripped from the Vikings runner and the Cougars ran it 30 yards for the first score of the game. The point after was good and Coastside took an 8-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Coastside’s offense was initially stuffed by the Vikings defense. On a Zaragoza blitz up the middle, the ball popped loose and Cade Neece was able to recover the fumble.

There were sparks of a throwing game, with Raquet putting the ball into Darius Parks, Soto and Fisher’s hands, but Hollister wasn’t able to move the chains enough to score. With only two minutes left in the game, the Vikings gave up precious yards due to penalties and Coastside ran the ball up the middle for the next score of the game. Holliser would lose 16-0.

“The boys tried their best, but we need to fix some things… we have a lot to do at practice,” Defensive Coach Matt Imbronone said. “But, there’s always next week.”

The standout players of the game were Soto and Guevara. Also worthy of mention was Peter Felice, in his first season at center, had a great game and snapped the ball well.

Mighty Mite – Coastside Cougars 24, Hollister Vikings 12

By Noelle Greene

Another game and another long defensive struggle for the Hollister Vikings. The Vikings fought hard in the first half to keep the Coastside Cougars down, but the Cougars played a power game, gaining impressive yardage in the first quarter and to score the first touchdown of the game.

To counter the touchdown, Anthony Sanchez received the kickoff, and took it to the Vikings’ 45 yard line. Back on defense, impressive tackles were made by Zak Fisher, Ivan Mendoza, Rudy Morales, and Joseph Frank.

The second quarter began with a fumble recovery by Sanchez while Gabriel Domingues helped keep the Cougars in their own territory. With one minute left in the half, Montoya and Sanchez were able to drive the ball for a Vikings touchdown making the score 6-6.

In the second half, the Vikings struggled to hold the Cougars who continued to tirelessly drive the ball toward the endzone. Fisher, Ricky Viramontes, Anthony Martin, and Nate Greene were valuable to the Vikings defense as they valiantly tackled and held the Cougars back. But it wasn’t enough, as the Cougars scored again with 3:41 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Cougars dominated on offense as the Vikings grew weary, scoring two more touchdowns in short order despite defensive tactics by Vikings Joshua Zapien, Domingues, Joseph Frank, Isaac Gutierrez, Viramontes and Martin.

But the Vikings had one final burst of energy and Montoya made a long run, with Sanchez fighting for the Vikings’ second touchdown, assisted by Sky Freer who bravely blocked the Cougar attack.

“We played hard, but didn’t play a full four quarters because we tired out,”Head Coach Frank Montoya said. “Anthony Sanchez was flying around on defense, but as a team we need to work on our defense. Half Moon Bay outworked us on the line of scrimmage, and proved to be a disciplined team.”

Tiny Mites – Hollister Vikings, Coastside Cougars – no score

By Tom Vivian

The Tiny Mites scrimmaged with Coastside on Saturday morning and the team came up with lots of big plays on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Justin Cortez broke two 40-yard runs, aided by blocking from his offensive line that included Mitchell Sanchez, Ladanian Gaytan, Juan Cortez, Elias Escamilla, William Sachau, Gabriel Torres and Isaac Barragan. Dionicio Gutirrez also had several good runs, including one touchdown run.

Defensively, many players stepped up to make big plays. Cortez made a big tackle on a sweep to force an eight yard loss and recovered a fumble late in the contest. Gavin Homen and Sachau made tackles to stop one Coastside drive, and Gregory Mendoza made a TD-saving tackle on a breakway run, as did Keith Peliaz, who showed great pursuit on the outside runs throughout the game. Devin Homen also broke up a pass play.
