Foothill College beats Rams 7-0 Tuesday, keeps Gavilan winless
in Coast Conference play
LOS ALTOS HILLS

Still searching for their first league win in the Coast Conference, the Gavilan Rams men’s soccer team fell below .500 for the first time this season when they lost to host Foothill College on Tuesday by a convincing 7-0 score.

The Rams are now 0-3 in the Coast Conference, 4-5 overall.

“We got a hair cut, and we didn’t want one,” coach Albert Marques said.

Gavilan, which trailed Foothill 3-0 at halftime, fell behind 2-nil after just five minutes of play.

Marques said his team came out flat.

“We played sloppy in the beginning and guys went unmarked,” Marques said, “and you can’t do that at the college level.”

The Rams won just a pair of games last season, but opened this year strong with a 3-1 record. Since opening league on Sept. 26, however, Gavilan has struggled on the offensive side of the ball, and have been outscored in three Coast Conference games by a 13-1 margin.

“We’ve hit a wall lately,” said Marques, whose 19-man roster includes just three sophomores.

“The challenge for a young team like Gavilan College is to continually get better week after week,” he said. “You have to continually get better and better and I think we were content. [Tuesday’s] game was an eye-opener for some of the freshmen.”

The Rams will return home to Gilroy on Friday and host Chabot College at 4 p.m.

“We have to refocus and get reorganized going into the game and play strong,” Marques said.
