It’s official, I’m all done being a pro football fan for this season. My beloved Green Bay Packers are in the toilet at 0-4 and they don’t look like a team that’s going to get any better any time soon.

I know, I know, it’s pretty weak for a sports fan to give up on his or her favorite team only a quarter of the way through the season. But the fact of the matter is, I just can’t take it anymore. I can’t bear to hear all of these Joe-Theisman types on TV with their second-grade vocabularies bashing my team. And, now that the media has begun speculating on whether or not Brett Favre should be traded to a contender, I’ve totally tuned out.

The Packers are a shadow of their former selves and I don’t want to have anything to do with it. Wake me up when we get an offensive line and a pair of cornerbacks that don’t draw penalty flags on every single play. Of course by that time, Favre may very well be occupying a rocking chair somewhere in Mississippi telling his grandkids stories about the 1997 Super Bowl.

I’m really looking forward to the playoff series between the Oakland Athletics and the … oh, wait a minute, the A’s went and had themselves another last-minute meltdown didn’t they? Sorry Oakland fans, I know that one’s a little low but, given the current state of misery my favorite pro franchise is in (see above), I feel the need to project my bitterness onto you guys.

For those of you who missed Tuesday night’s matchup between the SBHS volleyball team and Salinas, the noise being generated inside Mattson Gym was unlike anything I’ve heard since late into basketball season last year. Hollister is now at 5-0 in Tri-County Athletic League play and if you get the chance, I highly recommend checking out tonight’s home match against Notre Dame.

Lastly, congrats to Gilroy Dispatch staffers Ana Patejdl, Nathan Mixter, James Mohs and John Coscia for taking first place in last weekend’s golf tournament hosted by the GHS basketball booster club to benefit the school’s hoops program. They asked me if I’d like to play but the truth is, I golf like I play the French horn. It’s sad too. Back in the day, my father had a boat and we used to spend our weekends fishing. That is, until he sold the boat and bought a set of golf clubs. I haven’t seen him since.
