Hollister – Former County Administrative Officer Gil Solorio expects to decide within a week if he’ll accept the Board of Supervisors’ offer to return to the same job on an interim basis.

Solorio, who resigned from the CAO post in January, said Monday he’s yet to decide. The board announced Sept. 10 it had offered the job to Solorio.

Supervisors Reb Monaco and Pat Loe, who make up a subcommittee searching for a temporary CAO, said the the board expects to have a decision from Solorio to announce at a Sept. 28 meeting.

The board began a search for a temporary administrative leader after requesting a resignation from Dan Vrtis, who had held the position for three months before accepting supervisors’ offer to return to his prior role as county finance director.

Solorio confirmed he’ll make his decision within a week.

“It’s just basically a personal decision as well as combining the county’s needs, the organization’s needs,” said Solorio, who left on good terms after spending three years in the top managerial role.

If Solorio rejects the offer, the board likely would turn to the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) to ask for help in filling the position, Loe said. CSAC often refers retired or former administrators to counties seeking to fill temporary CAO roles.

Both supervisors said there’s a sense of urgency, but Loe added she has “total faith” in the current administrative staff led by management analyst Susan Lyons.

“I would assume we would move as quickly as possible,” Loe said.

Getting Solorio would be a plus, though, Monaco said, because he has knowledge of the county and its political players.

After Solorio left in January after three years as CAO, the county hired then assistant CAO Terry May as his successor. May left abruptly in June, after which the board hired Vrtis. Supervisors did not give a reason why they asked Vrtis to step down.
