Members of the PGA Tour have until Oct. 8 to commit to the Frys.com Open, the tour’s first event in Silicon Valley. Eligible players are assigned one of 38 priority rankings based on their performance in the PGA Tour. The field will change as players with better rankings commit to the tournament in San Martin.
Also Tuesday, Frys.com Open director Ian Knight announced that Kevin Chappell will receive the first sponsor exemption for the event. Chappell, another talented young player, has had success in the Bay Area. His April victory in the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae made him the leading money winner on the Nationwide Tour. Chappell has played in five PGA Tour events in the past two years, including a sixth-place finish in the 2009 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Part of the PGA Tour’s fall series, the Frys.com Open will feature a full field of 132 players and a $5 million purse with a $900,000 payout to the winner.
