After a regular season that recently culminated with an upset victory over 10th-ranked Hawaii, Utah State setter Chelsea Fowles was named Freshmen of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference.
The three-game win (30-28, 31-29, 30-27) over Hawaii marked the first time since 1981 that Utah State had defeated the Rainbow Wahine, and the first time ever a WAC team has defeated Hawaii in Honolulu.
As for Fowles, her year-end award was the first time an Aggie won the accolade since USU joined the WAC in 2005.
Fowles, a former member of the San Benito volleyball team and 2007 graduate, finished second in the WAC with 1,133 assists, averaging 12.45 a game. Only Hawaii sophomore Stephanie Brandt had more assists on the season (1,222, 12.86).
On Thursday, Utah State was a 3-seed in the 2007 WAC Volleyball Tournament, but fell in the quarterfinals to No. 6 San Jose State in five games (24-30, 30-28, 19-30, 30-28, 17-15).

Boyd’s time placed her 28th overall out of 118 harriers.
Just this week, the Northern Arizona cross country team jumped to No. 15 in the nation after their second-place showing at the Mountain Regionals.
At the Big Sky Championships on Oct. 27, Boyd had her best 5K time ever when she finished seventh overall in 18:02.9.
Northern Arizona took first place at the Big Sky Championships with 33 points, easily defeating Weber State’s 51-point finish.
Out east, Morgan O’Laughlin and the Bentley College Falcons advanced to the NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Championships.
