Gilroy’s Jeff Garcia, named the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this offseason, talked with The Free Lance about how training camp is going with his new team. Here are some excerpts of what the three-time Pro Bowler had to say about learning coach Jon Gruden’s complex offensive system and how he thinks his team will be able to perform after going 4-12 in 2006.

Jeff, how are you feeling and how is training camp going?

“I think it’s been real positive. I feel good as far as how I’ve come along with my knowledge of the system. Physically, I’ve felt good. There have been some positive additions to the team. It’s a team that could be pretty good if we continue to head in the right direction.

Has anyone stood out in your mind so far in camp?

“I think one guy is (wide receiver) David Boston. He is having an outstanding camp. He looks like he could once again be like the player he was a few years ago … Cadillac Williams looks really good. I think the offensive line is much improved. I think overall, the team is a better football team (than last year).”

The team recently cut defensive end Simeon Rice. Has this affected the team morale at all?

“Not really, I know that he is missed. I know that he was a veteran leader for this team. He played some great football for this team … It’s just the nature of the business, the nature of the beast.

Well, the Bucs drafted a guy I wanted on my team, the Detroit Lions, to get, D-End Gaines Adams. How has he looked?

Adams looks to be an athletic kid. He has a lot to learn. Everyday is a growing stage for him. I’m sure by the time we get into the season he’ll be able to start making some plays, but it takes some time. It’s not every day that you have a high drafted rookie that can come in and make a difference every day (consistently). Hopefully, it happens real soon.
