regular unleaded gasoline is $2.45, up 11 cents since last month’s
report on April 14.
SAN FRANCISCO – According to AAA Northern California, which tracks fuel costs for consumers, California’s statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $2.45, up 11 cents since last month’s report on April 14.
Northern California prices are up 13 cents from last month, and in the San Francisco Bay Area, motorists can expect to pay an average of $2.51 a gallon.
“Consumers most likely won’t have to worry about gas prices reaching the record highs of the past during this spring and summer,” said Matt Skryja, an AAA spokesman. “However, AAA believes gasoline prices will return to higher levels as the world economy starts to recover and begins steadily growing again.”
AAA staff cited the struggling economy as one of the reasons that gas prices will not hit the record prices of last summer. Demand for oil is at its weakest level since 1995. A Department of Energy report recently showed that U.S. crude oil inventories rose to 375 million barrels in early May, their highest levels since 1990.
One way consumers can reduce the amount of money they spend on fuel is to shop aggressively for the lowest price. The AAA Gas Price Finder allows consumers to locate low gas prices at home and when traveling. The online tool provides updated information 85,000 gas stations in the United States and Canada.
The tool lists prices for four San Benito gas stations – Toro Petroleum on Prospect Ave., Safeway on Tres Pinos Road, Shell on Tres Pinos Road, and Chevron on Prospect Ave. As of May 19, Toro has the lowest price at $2.47 a gallon and Chevron had the highest price at $2.67.
