Gavilan College evened its record in men’s basketball at 1-1 with an 80-72 defeat of College of the Redwoods in the Rams’ gym Thursday night.
The Rams exhibited balanced scoring as three players scored in double figures. Jody McAlpine and Steve Silacci had 13 points each while Maurice Davis had 11. Jemmy Herrera chipped in seven points.
Gavilan down by as many as nine points in the first half before slicing the deficit to three points at the intermission. The Rams’ defense tightened up and they hit the defensive glass and had some timely shooting to pull away from the Corsairs.
“We had a lot of contributions, but none larger than Steve Silacci’s,” Gavilan head coach Chris Shoemaker said. “Steve’s toughness and tenacity were the difference.”
The Rams opened the season last Friday by losing 98-70 to visiting Chabot. Gavilan was down just five points with 15 minutes to play before turnovers, unnecessary fouls and lack of boardwork proved detrimental.
Two former Hollister High players, Drew Brandon and Tommy Sondgroth, are on the Rams’ roster.
Gavilan is at Mendocino College Saturday.
