Splitting two matches at the Siskiyous Classic on Saturday, Gavilan women’s volleyball team currently stands at 7-5 on the season.

The Lady Rams fell short in four games to Siskiyous in a first-round match: 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16.

Arica Hernandez led all Gavilan attackers with 20 kills, many of which were set up by setter Jamie Skocko, who had 29 assists to go with four aces. Bri Romero led the team in digs with 19 and Liz Hermosillo followed with 17.

“We’re still playing without Bri Romero hitting in the front row due to injury,” Gavilan coach Kevin Kramer said. “As a result, we had to move Arica Hernandez to the outside hitter position and she has done a great job.”

Gavilan had far less trouble in its second match, beating American River 25-19, 25-18, 25-12.

The Lady Rams had a more even distribution of kills when compared to the first match, as sophomore Teresa Hodges had eight kills, matched by Hernandez with eight. Tessa Fischer finished with seven kills to go with two blocks.

Skocko again led the team in assists with 18, while also serving four aces.

Kramer credited the victory to a more under control approach when attacking the net.

“The consistently good ball control allowed for much better attacks from our hitters,” he said.

The Lady Rams will be back at home Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. when they host Foothill College in Coast Conference play.
