San Benito beats Gilroy 206-222, prepares for TCAL Finals

GILROY
San Benito and Gilroy’s girls golf teams both have youth, but one is more likely to add experience following the final match of the regular season held Wednesday at Gilroy Golf Course.
The visiting Lady ‘Balers of Hollister won 206-222, putting the Lady ‘Balers on par to make some noise at Monday’s Tri-County Athletic League Championships being held at Salinas Golf and Country Club.
“They were pretty good,” San Benito coach Chris Branon said oh his players. “Gilroy is a tough track because it’s a small green, municipal golf course.”
Jenny Glosser of San Benito and Gilroy’s Katie Kishimura medaled with low scores of 48.
The difference proved to be four other San Benito golfers – Yumi Kimura (53), Alexis Sanchez (51), Nicole Rianda (54) and Jordan Davies (59) – shooting low scores. Along with Kishimura, Megan Donahoe’s 51 was the only other Mustang score to crack 60. Gilroy’s Cassidy Daley, Alexis Driggs and Laura Fellows shot 62, 64 and 71, respectively.
“I’m hoping Megan and Katie play well at league finals,” Mustangs coach Eric Kuwada said. “They could make it to [the Central Coast Section tournament]. They’ll have to play really well, though.”
San Benito has so many players performing at a high level, that Branon had his team play a round Thursday to be fair in selecting the top six for Monday’s tournament, which begins at 11 a.m.
“We decided the best way to see who was going to go to TCAL was to play a qualifier,” Branon said.
The top six from Thursday’s in-house competition at Ridgemark Golf & Country Club were Glosser, Kimura, Sanchez, Rianda, Davies and Katie Moeller.
“At the beginning of the year, I would have said that we’re such a young team we wouldn’t have anybody (make it to CCS),” Branon said. “But there’s a chance we could get one or two individuals. And if they (all) play their best rounds, there’s a chance we could get in as a team.”
