Just before 1 p.m., chunks of ice – some the size of peas, others even larger – hammered Gilroy off an on for about 20 minutes.

When the larger stones ceased, minute hail continued to fall.

Precipitation is expected to continue through Friday afternoon in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

National Weather Service forecast for Hollister:

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. West southwest wind 14 to 17 mph decreasing to between 5 and 8 mph. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph.

Friday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Partly sunny, with a high near 57. East southeast wind at 5 mph becoming north northwest.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. Northwest wind at 6 mph becoming south southeast.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 63. Light wind becoming west between 10 and 13 mph.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 40.
