You’ve got to picture the stroke
One thing I hear very rarely from most of my students is how
they will picture their shots. Every professional and most single
digit index players I teach will describe the type of ball flight
they see for a shot. It is just like any other part of improving
your golf. It takes practice.

One thing I hear very rarely from most of my students is how they will picture their shots. Every professional and most single digit index players I teach will describe the type of ball flight they see for a shot. It is just like any other part of improving your golf. It takes practice.

Here is a drill I use with this level player to improve their picturing a shot. I use three of our target greens on the driving range. I want them to hit three different shots into each one of them – one low hook, one high fade and one straight shot. By doing it this way they first have to picture what each shot looks like. Next they need to think about how to hit the shot and lastly they have to execute the shot.

If I said to you, “elephant,” I’m pretty sure you would picture an elephant. So when you are working on this, say to yourself what type of shot you are attempting to hit. It will send a picture of the shot to your body to perform. This is a great way to finish up a practice session; shots will turn out better when you play if you see it first. Play well.
