Golf can take your breath away
Lately I have noticed a lot of my students are out of breath
after they have finished their swing. None of them are aware that
they are holding their breath while they are swinging.
It is something they didn’t even realize was happening until
after I asked them about it. I told them I just hope it is not
happening while they are driving their car.

Lately I have noticed a lot of my students are out of breath after they have finished their swing. None of them are aware that they are holding their breath while they are swinging.

It is something they didn’t even realize was happening until after I asked them about it. I told them I just hope it is not happening while they are driving their car.

If you are holding your breath during your golf swing it can lead to a fast, jerky, out of balance hit. Remember, it is a golf swing not a golf hit. A swing has a relationship to its target; a hit has a relationship to the ball. Yes, you are trying to hit the ball, but don’t forget you are trying to hit it towards a target. When you play golf the target is what is important.

The next time you watch a tennis or martial arts match listen to the sound you hear when the participants make contact with the ball or their opponent. The sound will be the sharp exhaling of air. To ensure you aren’t holding your breath, the next time you are at the practice range do this: on your back swing breathe in and on your forward swing breathe out.

Not only will this assure that you’re breathing, it is also a good way to keep your rhythm during your swing. So unless you are playing golf under water you need to breathe. Play well.
