Playing golf in the wind is something we all have done. In order to score well we need to make a few physical changes and also a few mental ones. Any type of spin on the ball will be enhanced by the direction the wind is blowing so minimizing spin will help.

First, set up with a wider stance. This will help to keep you in balance when the wind gusts. An added benefit is that a wider stance will shorten your swing, thus giving you more control. This will also help with your tempo, which is essential. Second, take more club. This will flatten out your swing plane and send the ball towards the target on a lower flight, thus reducing the effect of the wind on the ball.

Most people worry that they will lose distance when playing in the wind. Accept that, and remember, everyone is playing in the same conditions. Don’t try and hit the ball harder-it will only create unwanted lift and sidespin on the ball. If you’re playing against the wind, tee the ball lower to keep the ball flight low. When playing with the wind tee the ball higher this way the ball will stay in the air longer and fly farther. Along that same line, you might consider using a 3 wood instead of a driver.

Remember, don’t try to power the ball. Instead, swing with ease against a breeze. Play well.
