I have just finished reading an article called “The New Tour Swing” in Golf Digest. It is a very interesting piece; the ‘new’ swing is called Stack & Tilt. I am sure a book will soon follow. All these things interest me as a golf instructor, as does this one.

They are teaching a lack of weight shift away from the ball on the backswing and a hip thrust on the forward swing. I am not going to go over all the parts of how it works and I am not giving an opinion of whether I think it works – I am sure it does for some as I am also sure it doesn’t for others.

Last year the book of the new swing was written by Jim Hardy and is called “The Plane Truth.” It talked about the two swings, the one-plane and the two-plane swing. And there were top PGA instructors that became disciples of this method. I have had students that have read the book or seen Jim on the Golf Channel doing an infomercial. But I do have problems with that.

When a new swing comes along most people that read the books or watch the DVDs are trying to teach themselves a new way of swinging the golf club. It is not easy to do, even for a tour player. But a tour player usually has the creator of this method working with them to refine their individual swings to fit this style; the rest of the golfing world is on their own.

If I get a student that comes to me and says they have read the Plane Truth and have a natural two plane swing but want to switch to a one plane because they were told it is better, it is the equivalent of saying they are right handed but read it is better to be left handed. It is not that they couldn’t, but are they willing to work hard enough to make that change?

I read all the books so I can help people with these ‘new’ swings. And I will read Stack & Tilt when it comes out. I already have a student that wants the new tour swing, but please never forget if you want to try a new method, go see a PGA or LPGA professional that is familiar with how it works. Do-it-by yourself doesn’t work in golf, just ask Tiger Woods. Play well.

Just a reminder Eagle Ridge’s Kids Course is open every Sunday starting at 2 PM. It is for young golfers 12 and under. We provide the clubs and balls. You play as many holes as you want for $5.
