Make your own Slice Be Gone
Wouldn’t it be nice to walk into your local golf shop and buy a
box of Slice Be Gone? Until that day comes, we are just going to
have to make our own homemade version. I think I can give you a
recipe that will work, and you already have all the ingredients you
need.
Make your own Slice Be Gone
Wouldn’t it be nice to walk into your local golf shop and buy a box of Slice Be Gone? Until that day comes, we are just going to have to make our own homemade version. I think I can give you a recipe that will work, and you already have all the ingredients you need.
When you want to fix a golf swing, you need two goals: a short-term and a long-term goal. I don’t think that with all of the golf magazines, the Golf Channel, and golf radio shows around today, that I need to explain what the causes of a slice are. (Keep in mind your long-term goal is to (get rid of your slice.)
You need to set your short-term goal, which is this: you need to be able to swing the club from the inside out and rotate the clubface closed through impact. (This is your short-term goal.) What we are trying to accomplish is to draw the ball from right to left, no matter how far left (for a right handed golfer); and have NO TARGET until you can hit eight out of ten shots this way.
Let’s begin: take your address position with your shoulders and hips slightly closed (right foot further from the target line than your left). We need to rehearse this type of motion quite a bit before we start hitting balls, so here is what you do. Take the club back with an early wrist cock. In your down swing, you want an inside out swing path. You should feel your right elbow close to or touching your side on the way down. As you swing the club through impact, you need to rotate the face of the club closed.
This part requires pretty good timing and will take a little patience to master. A good mental picture you can use is to make the same motion you would use to turn left in your car: right hand rotates over the left. Your finish should be high, not wide and flat. Start rehearsing this in slow motion until you can feel things happening just as I have described them.
Once you feel things happen this way, start hitting balls. Don’t forget – no target; all you want is to shape your shot to move from right to left. As you work on this, you may create some big hooks; just keep in mind that is your short-term goal. When I am working with a golf professional or top-ranked amateur, they are generally fighting a hook and want to turn it into a draw. Once you do start to hook the ball on a regular basis, come see me and I will help you hit it straighter. Play well.
