For almost all golf shots, golfers try to have the same swing and same tempo. They try to take the club back the same distance and keep the same club speed.

Most golfers carry 13 clubs designed to go different distances, this system works throughout most rounds.

But then Golfers come to the green and use the same putter for a 2-foot putt as a 42-foot putt.

Many golfers try to use the same size backstroke for all putts. For shorts putts, some golfers will still take a long stroke only to decelerate as the swing makes contact wit the ball. Other golfers use the same short putting stroke on long putts and speed up the stroke to hit it further – you know, the jab.

To be a good putter, golfers need to use the same tempo in all putt strokes and instead change the size of the stroke depending on the distance of the putt.

Many times during a putting lesson, I ask the student to putt from different distances and I pick the putt they make the most because their stroke and tempo will match the distance.

In all of the other putts, the student will either speed up or slow down their stroke. I use a common wooden yard stick marked in colors for 1, 2, and 3-foot putting strokes for teaching different putting strokes. By putting within the same color zone with the same tempo, my students are able to learn distance control.

If you are having trouble controlling your putting distance, swing by Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, and try out one of my yard sticks. If you need more help, schedule a lesson with myself or any of our other teaching professionals.
